For those interested in arts and culture Rosebank is an ideal location. Not only is there a cluster of cutting edge contemporary art galleries along the ‘Art Strip’ on Jan Smuts Ave in Parkwood, but some of the best known African art dealers, markets and galleries are located in the Rosebank area. Other cultural hotspots like Newtown, Melville, Braamfontien and Arts on Main are a mere 10 minutes away. If you only have a short stay in Joburg, remember that most galleries are closed on Sundays and Mondays. For those who enjoy the cinema, Cinema Nouveau in the Rosebank Mall offers an excellent range of the latest art-house movies, while The Zone specializes in Bollywood movies. Two international cultural institutions, the Alliance Francais and the Goethe Instituut, are located in the Rosebank area. For those who are interested in museums and heritage sites the War Museum in Saxonwold is world renowned amongst specialists for some of its rare exhibits, while Constitution Hill in nearby Braamfontein and the Apartheid Museum offer fascinating insights into South Africa’s recent traumatic history.
