Joburg offers a vibrant club life although the Jozi public is notoriously fickle, so places come and go, in and out of fashion with lightning speed. Always check beforehand as to which are still the happening places. The Rosebank Region has a wide choice of pubs and watering holes where locals gather for a drink after work or to watch sport over the week-end. So check with your guesthouse for your nearest local venue.
There are many annual events held in Johannesburg. At the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, dozens of local and international jazz musicians converge on Johannesburg for three days at the end of August. The Arts Alive International Festival, held in Johannesburg in September is an annual festival of music, dance, theatre and performance-poetry. Jazz on the Lake also September is a well-attended concert at the Zoo Lake, Parkview. Open –air concerts are held on Sundays in winter at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens – so take a picnic lunch and blanket and chill out on the grass. You can walk to the waterfall to see the Black Eagles nesting and if you are lucky they might even have a chick in the nest.
