The Rosebank Region is the most convenient area to start exploring Greater Johannesburg (affectionately known as Jozi). It lies in the heart of a greenbelt of parks, which includes Delta Park, Emmarentia Dam and the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, the Johannesburg Zoo and Zoo Lake, Melville Koppies, and The Wilds. There are also at least 10 golf courses within a 10km range of Rosebank Central. It's also only a short trip to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden famous for its pair of black eagles.
If it’s the big five you are after, visit the Pilanesberg National Park near Sun City. Leave at 6 in the morning, about a 2 hour drive, and enjoy a day in the bush. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Park covers an area of 55 000 hectares. There are nearly 200 kilometres of excellent quality roads for either self-drives or guided drives, and professional guides operate within the park. Numerous hides and scenic picnic sites enable the tourist to experience "out-of-car" experiences as well. Rhino and Lion Park in the Cradle of Humankind is about a 40 minute drive with a wide range of African animals to see, or have your photograph taken with baby lion, cheetah or tiger cubs. Also in the park explore the Wonder Cave, a huge single limestone cavern. The Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre at De Wildt is about an hours drive from Johannesburg in the Magaliesburg. Initially a cheetah breeding project, other endangered animals are now also bred, such as the African Wild Dog, the brown hyaena, servals, Suni Antelope and riverine rabbits. Also in the Magaliesberg is the Elephant Sanctuary. Join a morning or afternoon group, where you can touch and even be kissed by one of these huge creatures |
